The real voyage of discovery

Wherever we go, we take ourselves with us. Not just our bodies but our minds, our psychological baggage, our beliefs and our prejudices, our assumptions and our questions. In short we take everything that makes us who we are - and that can get in the way.

The truth is that wherever we go we tend to see only what we expect to see. We interpret the motives of those around us through the well-used lenses of our past experience. We often fail to see what's right in front of our eyes because we're too focused on the things that went before.

And that's just as true whether we travel to exotic lands or stay rooted in place at the bottom of our own back yard!

"The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes, but in having new eyes."

(Marcel Proust)
